Internship Development

 

Purpose of Getting an Internship:

  • Gain practical experience
  • Determine if a career interest is a good fit for your long-term goals
  • Learn/Develop skills that may transfer to any number of positions/industries
  • Establish a professional set of contacts and network connections
  • May need or use it to meet academic requirements

Basic Steps to take in finding an Internship:

MONTH ONE:

  • Get Started:  join at least one club/get a part-time job on campus/volunteer your time
    - will lead to making good career-related personal and professional connections
  • Identify type of position you would like to pursue
    - Part-time job or Internship
    - Credit/not for credit
    - Paid/Not Paid
  • Determine the field and/or industry in which you would like to work
  • Create your first draft of a resume
  • Let everyone in your personal network know you are seeking career-related work
  • Visit Career Services to discuss steps to take to begin your search

MONTH TWO:

  • Bring resume to Career Services for initial critique and subsequent critiques
  • Complete the resume and set up accound in HuskyCareerLink
  • Research organizations in the industry that you have decided to pursue for general information
  • Arrange for an informational interview or a job shadow with industry of interest
  • Establish who will serve as positive references and get reference page together

MONTH THREE:

  • Create a job search notebook (hard copy/com[uter) and keep excellent notes
  • Identify deadlines for applications and establish a timeline to mark a calendar for each organization (not all organizations will have deadlines - start early with those)
  • Contact organizations via email or telephone to inquire about upcoming opportunities (use discretion, don't be a stalker!)
  • Update your resume to reflect break activity and current coursework
  • Participate in Career Services' mock interview program/attend interviewing workshops/OCI
  • Attend the Internship/Co-Op and/or theHuman Services/Non-Profit Career Fairs
  • Continue contacting employers and organizations in your area of interest

MONTHS FOUR AND MORE:

  • Continue to send out resumes and cover letters and follow up with organizations approximately 2 weeks after sending the resume and cover letter.
  • Work with Career Services as needed to fine tune process and receive support
